6. Transport Mappings

SNMP is normally carried over the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), using the well-known port 161 for get, get-next, and set messages, and port 162 for trap messages. However, the protocol is designed to be separable from the transport layer, and may also be carried over other transport protocols.

Implementations must support operation over UDP. The mapping of SNMP onto a particular transport is defined by that transport's own addressing and demultiplexing mechanisms.
