6. TRANSPORT MAPPINGS

The SNMP is normally sent over the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), using the well-known port 161 for get, get-next, and set messages, and port 162 for trap messages. However, the protocol is designed to be separable from the transport layer, and may be carried over other transports.

Implementations must support operation over UDP. The mapping of SNMP to a particular transport is specified by the use of the transport's own addressing and demultiplexing mechanisms.
