4. プロトコルの要素 (Elements of Protocol)

本プロトコルは Abstract Syntax Notation One ([ASN.1]) を用いて記述され、ASN.1 の Basic Encoding Rules ([BER]) のサブセットを用いて転送される。プロトコル要素の符号化と転送方法はセクション 5 で規定する。

本プロトコルの将来の拡張を支援するため、ASN.1 が許可する箇所では拡張性を暗黙的に認める。すなわち、sequence、set、choice、および enumerated 型は拡張可能である。さらに、[RFC4520] で述べられているように、明示的に拡張可能な ASN.1 型には省略記号 (...) を付与する。暗黙的な拡張性があるため、特に規定がない限り、client と server は認識できない tag を持つ trailing SEQUENCE component を無視しなければならない (MUST)。

本書に記載された extension mechanism 以外のプロトコル変更には、異なる version number が必要となる。client は BindRequest において使用するバージョンを示す。client が Bind をまだ送信していない場合、server は client が version 3 以上を使用しているとみなさなければならない (MUST)。

client は root DSE (DSA-Specific Entry) [RFC4512] の supportedLDAPVersion attribute を読み取ることで、server がサポートする protocol version を特定しようとすることができる。
