3. Overview

In a Decentralized Mapping System (DMS), the clients of the mapping system are also providers of mapping state. ETRs Map-Register EID-to-RLOC mappings, ITRs send Map-Requests, and xTRs participating in the DMS also act as Map-Resolvers and Map-Servers using LISP control-plane machinery from RFC 9301, RFC 9303, and ECDSA-AUTH.

All xTRs and Map-Servers MUST support the same authentication and authorization procedures needed for interoperability. All xTRs and Map-Servers MUST support either the pull-based or push-based algorithm. The two algorithms cannot be mixed within the same Mapping System; if both are used, they are fully discrete Mapping Systems.

RFC 9962 describes two decentralized mechanisms: a Decent-Push-based Mapping System using IP multicast, and a Decent-Pull-based Mapping System using DNS plus algorithmic hashing.
