7.2. Registration of URN Namespaces

This document outlines the processes for registering URN namespaces and has implications for the IANA in terms of registries to be maintained (see especially Section 6).

Registration Process

In all cases, the IANA ought to assign the appropriate NID (formal or informal) once the procedures outlined in Section 6 have been completed.

IANA Responsibilities

IANA needs to:

  1. Maintain NID Registry: Record all registered namespace identifiers
  2. Assign Formal NIDs: Assign formal namespace identifiers based on expert review
  3. Assign Informal NIDs: Sequentially assign informal identifiers with "urn-" prefix plus digits
  4. Publish Registration Information: Make all namespace registration details publicly available

Registration Requirements

  • Formal Namespaces: Require complete namespace definition documents and expert review
  • Informal Namespaces: Require basic information and simplified review process
  • Fast Track: Provide accelerated registration option for certain cases

IANA's role is to ensure transparency, consistency, and accessibility in the URN namespace registration process.
