10. IANA Considerations

10. IANA Considerations

This document defines the procedures that IANA uses for managing the Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number registry. The following specific actions are required:

10.1. Service Name Consistency

IANA has updated the Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number registry to ensure consistency with the service name syntax defined in Section 5.1 of this document. For existing entries that do not conform to the new syntax, IANA has:

  • Created new conforming service names where necessary
  • Marked legacy non-conforming names appropriately
  • Ensured that DNS SRV-compatible names are available for all services

10.2. Port Numbers for SCTP and DCCP Experimentation

IANA has designated the following port number ranges for experimentation with SCTP and DCCP:

  • SCTP experimentation: ports 1021-1023 (System Ports range) and ports 49128-49150 (User Ports range)
  • DCCP experimentation: ports 1021-1023 (System Ports range) and ports 49128-49150 (User Ports range)

These port numbers should not be used for production services and are reserved for testing and experimentation purposes.

10.3. Updates to DCCP Registries

IANA has updated the DCCP-related registries to align with the procedures described in this document, ensuring consistency across all transport protocol port number registries.
