4. IANA Considerations
Deprecation of IPv4-Compatible IPv6 Addresses
The "IPv4-Compatible IPv6 Address" format has been deprecated by this document.
IANA should continue to list the address block containing these addresses as "Reserved by IETF" at ````http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv6-address-space\```` and must not reassign it for any other purpose.
Example:
0000::/8 Reserved by IETF [RFC3513] [1]
IANA Added Notes
IANA has added the following note and link to this address block:
[5] 0000::/96 was previously defined as the "IPv4-Compatible IPv6 address" prefix. This definition has been deprecated by RFC 4291.
Registry Updates
IANA has updated the references in the IANA registry for the IPv6 Addressing Architecture accordingly.
IPv6 Address Space Allocation
IANA is responsible for managing the allocation of IPv6 address space. Current IPv6 address allocations can be viewed at:
- IPv6 Address Space Registry: ````http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv6-address-space\````
- IPv6 Unicast Address Assignments: ````http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv6-unicast-address-assignments\````
- IPv6 Multicast Address Assignments: ````http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv6-multicast-addresses\````
Special-Purpose Addresses
The following address blocks have special purposes and are managed by IANA:
| Address Block | Purpose | Reference |
|---|---|---|
::/128 | Unspecified Address | RFC 4291 |
::1/128 | Loopback Address | RFC 4291 |
::ffff:0:0/96 | IPv4-Mapped Addresses | RFC 4291 |
fe80::/10 | Link-Local Unicast | RFC 4291 |
ff00::/8 | Multicast | RFC 4291 |
