Overview

RFC 4120 represents the work of many individuals and organizations who have contributed to the development and refinement of the Kerberos protocol over many years.

Original Kerberos Development

The Kerberos protocol was originally developed at MIT as part of Project Athena. Key contributors to the early versions include:

  • Steve Miller (Digital Equipment Corporation)
  • Clifford Neuman (USC Information Sciences Institute)
  • Jerome Saltzer (MIT - Technical Director of Project Athena)
  • Jeffrey Schiller (MIT - Campus Network Manager)
  • Many other Project Athena members

Kerberos Version 5

The design and development of Kerberos V5 involved:

  • Clifford Neuman and John Kohl (design leadership)
  • MIT reference implementation team
  • Community input and feedback
  • Numerous RFC 1510 implementers and users

RFC 4120 Development

This document (RFC 4120) clarifies and updates RFC 1510 based on:

  • Implementation experience
  • Deployment feedback
  • Security considerations
  • Interoperability requirements
  • Community proposals and revisions
