概要 (Abstract)

本文書は、インターネット電子メール転送の基本プロトコルの仕様である。複数の以前の文書を統合、更新、明確化し、それらのほとんどまたは全部を時代遅れにする。現代のインターネットのSMTP拡張メカニズムとベストプラクティスを網羅しているが、特定の拡張の詳細は提供しない。SMTPはメール転送および配信プロトコルとして設計されたが、本仕様には「分割UA」(User Agent) メール読み取りシステムおよびモバイル環境の「メール送信」プロトコルとしての使用に重要な情報も含まれている。
