Diskussionen in der IETF JSONPATH WG darüber, ob ein Regexp-Mechanismus in die JSONPath-Abfrageausdrucksspezifikation aufgenommen werden soll, sowie frühere Diskussionen über das YANG-Muster und die Concise Data Definition Language (CDDL) .regexp-Funktionen motivierten diese Spezifikation.
Der grundlegende Ansatz für diese Spezifikation wurde von "The I-JSON Message Format" [RFC7493] inspiriert.
