14. Definitions of Terms

For the purposes of this document, the following terms are defined:

Specification: A specification is a coherent set of technical requirements which is intended to satisfy one or more use requirements.

Use requirement: A use requirement is a statement of an application requirement.

Internet Standard: A specification that is stable and well-understood, is technically competent, has multiple, independent, and interoperable implementations with substantial operational experience, enjoys significant public support, and is recognizably useful in some or all parts of the Internet.

Technical Specification (TS): A specification that defines a protocol, message format, procedure, or other technical aspect.

Applicability Statement (AS): A specification that specifies how, and under what circumstances, one or more TSs may be applied to support a particular Internet capability.

Requirement Level: A designation in a specification indicating the degree to which a stated requirement must be met.
